Meet Grand Slam Contestant, Freya!
Name: Freya Zork
Location: East Falls, Philadelphia
Slam won: Liar, Liar
Q: What was the last thing you won (StorySlam not included)?
A: I didn’t win, but I was recently a serious contender in a spicy food eating competition. The dishes got progressively hotter from the prelims to the finals until I ended up having to eat a bowl of “soup” that was basically just a huge bowl of that red chili paste that they give you in the jar at pho restaurants. We were judged on speed, stoicism, and not vomiting. I got second place out of about ninety people. (Hell yes!) Afterwards I had an out of body experience and then got lost while looking for my car.
Q: FPA has been doing Slams in Philly for 7 years now. (Woot!) In honor of that, tell us a story in 7 words.
A: The owls are not what they seem.
Q: What would your dream theme be for a StorySlam? What story would you tell?
A: The theme would be Desperado and the story would be about my cat.
Q: Who do you know that tells the worst (or best) stories?
A: My mom cracks me up. She does tell great stories, but also has this way of mixing up the words in expressions, which usually results in an even better expression. Like the other day, she was saying that they were giving some guy a hard time. I think she meant to say “they raked him across the coals”, but instead she said “they dragged him across the rakes.” Ouch! I love it.
Q: Why are you a good storyteller? (aka why should your competitors be scared?)
A: Hmm, good storyteller? I did win a Slam this season, but then the next time I went up I got the lowest score in the history of First Person Arts StorySlams. So fear that, competitors!
See Freya compete at the Grand Slam on Friday, May 16 at Underground Arts for the title of “Best Storyteller in Philadelphia” and $250! DON’T WAIT! This event sells out every season.
